This footwear retains the classic DNA of Dr. Martens, including grooved sides, visible stitching, and a scripted heel-loop. It offers good slip resistance and abrasion-resistance, and is constructed on the iconic, durable Dr. Martens air-cushioned sole. This is a Goodyear-welted product, made with Burnished Wyoming leather, which has a subtle grain and oily surface, and has been burnished to darken the toe and counter area.
The Rometty is based on the traditional 2976 pattern, with a thick, platform sole that takes this style to the next level. Accentuated heel and vamp panels add a contemporary feel to this well-known style.
Dr. Martens: A Legacy of Innovation:
The story of Dr. Martens began in 1945, near Munich, Germany, when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole, using old rubber tires to construct soles with trapped air within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes.
The concept of an air-cushioned sole was initially met with skepticism, as many manufacturers viewed it as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to embrace the idea and create the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On April 1, 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens, and the range was branded AirWair, which went on to become a lasting legacy.
